"Paris At Night"

...I see in autumn’s pall the fall of all my dreams

And must take spade and rake, and labor like a slave

To scrape and save the soil washed thin by swollen streams

Whose flooding swirls out pits deep and wide as the grave.

Who knows if the late flowers blossoming in my brain

Can find in this earth, drained like beaches by the rain,

The mystic sustenance for a vigorous new start… ..

L'Histoire

Catherine de Médicis

Daughter of Larent II of Médicis of Italy and Madeleine of Bourbon. Born in Florence in 1519. She married in 1533, Henri II, the second son of François the First. Her rival was the king’s mistress, Diane of Poitiers. Not only queen of France, she was also the mother of 3 other French kings: François II, Charles IX and Henri III. She had the Palace of the Tuileries built, as well as the chateâu of Monceaux and continued the construction of the Louvre. She died in 1589.

Les Dévises des Reines et des Rois

Many of the Kings and Queens of France chose emblems of their reign. If you look closely at châteaux (especially in the Loire) you might recognize some of the following:

The Pelican

"Tegit virtue minores" (by his courage he protects his children) The emblem attributed to Marie de Médicis the second wife of Henri IV.

Le Cygne

Emblem of Queen Claude of France, wife of François I

Ancient Megaliths

Is this a picture of a "menhir" or a "dolmen"?

dolmen, stone

C'est un dolmen!

...a mysterious group of upright stones that supports a top flat stone, perhaps used either as a burial tomb or table for sacrifices dating from about 5000-2000 B.C. It's estimated that it took several hundred men to pull and elevate the dolmen's roof of 32 tons. This dolmen can be seen at Bougon in the Deux-Sèvres.

A "menhir" is one single upright stone. Most can be found in Brittany where there are numerous alignments. The most famous of these sites can be found at Carnac in the Morbihan.
